Whitecleave Quarry Information

Whitecleave Quarry is in Buckfastleigh. It is a major natural landmark for the town, right on the Southern edge of Dartmoor National Park.

There are plans to develop the quarry. Plans were previously submitted in a planning application by Gilpin Demolition in 2008. This application was subsequently withdrawn. There are now new proposals and the original application has changed little other than that there are now plans for processing facility for waste-incinerator ash. The waste-incinerator ash will be brought to site from the proposed waste incinerator to be built at Devonport Docks in Plymouth. All the documents relating to the original 2008 application can be found here.

A scoping report for an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) was lodged by MVV/Gilpin with Devon County Council in February 2011.

This report outlines details of the new proposals for the site, including the ash processing facility. DCC carried out the statutory consultation on this scoping document, and had to respond within a few weeks. DCC have subsequently responded.

Here are all the details we have so far re the scoping report.

Details of ongoing monitoring activity.

We have compiled a list of Frequently Asked Questions in order to make it easier for people to understand what is going on both with Whitecleave Quarry FAQs, and Incinerator FAQs.

We have used plans from the scoping report to help visually illustrate what is going to be done.

We have also added a small photo-gallery to put things into perspective.

Many people are concerned about the local environmental and ecological impact of the plans. We have a special page dedicated to the environmental and ecological issues.

We will be continually updating this site with more information. Please e-mail us any concerns or views you have.
